The checklist
- 3D model: STEP or native SolidWorks
- 2D drawing with tolerances, GD&T, and revision level
- Material grade and condition (e.g. 6061-T6, 17-4 H900)
- Finish and any outside processes: anodize, passivation, plating, heat treat
- Quantities: prototype, first production order, expected annual volume
- Documentation: C of C, material certs, FAI, PPAP, or medical records
- Target ship date and delivery location
- Notes: critical features, cosmetic surfaces, what's been hard for other suppliers
What slows quotes down
- No material callout
- Model and drawing that don't match
- "Tight tolerance" notes with no numbers
- Unknown quantities
Protecting your IP
Ask for an NDA before sending sensitive drawings. Any established shop will sign one; if your data is export controlled, say so before you send it.
